Our Curriculum

Our history topic teaches children all about the ancient kingdom of Benin: how the ancient kingdom began, what life was like for the Edo people, the transatlantic slave trade and what we can learn from the Benin Bronzes. Our history topic links with our English texts: The Undefeated, Journey Back to Freedom, based on the life of Olaudah Equiano, and Coming to England – based on the life of Floella Benjamin.

Our geography project is all about the skills we need to be a geographer and then using these skills in fieldwork on our local area. Science includes living things and their habitats and electricity. In computing, we will look at coding, with a focus on the enigma code and visiting Bletchley Park.

English:

• Black and British: An Illustrated History by David Olusoga
• Maths: Place value, number operations, fractions and measurement
• Science: Living Things and their Habitats, Electricity
• Geography: How to be a Geographer (a local fieldwork study)
• History: The Ancient Kingdom of Benin
• PSHE: Being Me in My World and Celebrating Difference
• PE: Lacrosse and Yoga
• RE: Islam - Beliefs and practices, Christianity - Christmas and Incarnation
• Computing: Computing Systems and Networks and Data Handling
• Art: Abstraction and Distortion
• Learning Behaviour: Responsibility and Kindness

PE

Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Please send children to school in their PE kits on these days.

All children must have a white top or house colour, black or navy shorts. Trainers, joggers and jumpers will be required for outdoor PE.

Forest School

Thursday afternoons.

All children need wellies and a waterproof coat for forest school.

How can you support your children at home?

Reading – You should read with your child at least 5 times a week at home. We will check Reading Cloud each week and your child should be adding a blog or review about the book they are reading at home.

Spellings – Sent out on a Friday and tested on the Friday after. These can be completed on Spelling Shed

TT Rockstars- Use TT Rockstars to practise times tables. Children will be tested through the ’99 club’ on a Monday.

CGP reading homework: to be handed in every Friday. 

Topic homework:

There is a topic homework sheet attached. We would like the children to choose at least one piece to do and bring in to share with the class.
